Pain Management

Animals experience pain in much the same way as people do, they are just more likely to hide it. At Animal Medical Center, we develop pain management strategies for pets who have experienced an injury or trauma, for infections, before and after surgery, as well as pain caused by chronic conditions such as arthritis.

Because pets do tend to hide their pain as an instinctive reaction, pet parents need to be able to recognize signs of pain. Some common indicators include:

Dogs:

  • • Decreased social interaction
  • • Submissive behavior
  • • Refusal to move
  • • Whimpering
  • • Howling
  • • Growling
  • • Aggression
  • • Decreased appetite
  • • Changes in posture

Cats:

  • • Reduced activity
  • • Loss of appetite
  • • Loss of curiosity
  • • Changes in bathroom habits
  • • Hiding
  • • Hissing or spitting
  • • Lack of agility
  • • Stiff posture
  • • Excessive grooming
  • • Tail flicking
  • • Weight loss
